Chin surgery (mentoplasty)
What is a mentoplasty?
Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the chin, creating better facial balance that can greatly improve one's self esteem.
What does mentoplasty improve?
Chin surgery can:
- Strengthen the appearance of a weak chin by advancing it, or augmenting it with use of implants.
- Reduce the size of the chin to improve overall balance of the face.
- Chin surgery is sometimes done in tandem with nose surgery to achieve optimal facial proportion.
How is the procedure performed?
Each procedure is individualized according to a patient's specific needs, but a mentoplasty requires anesthesia. If chin advancement is the goal, that procedure involves dividing the chin bone and sliding it forward through a small incision made inside the mouth. This lengthens the jaw. Chin augmentation involves the insertion of an implant, either through a small incision inside the mouth or under the chin. Chin reduction is accomplished through reduction of the bone.
